The roles of religious leaders in curing disease
Curing disease
In the ancient Roman times the Romans had many religious beliefs about how people becomes sick or injured and they had a religious and yet also fundamental understanding of medicine and how to cure people. Very many of the ancient Romans believed that the misfortune of illness or injuries was brought on by disfavor of the gods. Religious medicines were considered very rare but ‘magical’ cures were performed very commonly to any illness that was believed to be a ‘curse’.

Maintaining health
One of the most important roles that the priests and high priests had was to insure the health of the roman community. They were very responsible for making sure that the people were healthy and communicating with god to insure that they had no bad spirits spreading disease and infection trough the civilization. They would do this by having rituals and preyers and riding the cursed people of their diseases or banishing them for being under the misfortune of the gods. Although the priests ideas of medicine were wrong and they believed their gods were curing the ill people, their cures and treatments were actually proven very helpful and the treatments they used helped many sick people in their civilization.
