The role of Jewelry
In ancient Roman times jewelry was worn by both men and women, The males would usually wear one ring around his finger it is called a signet ring and was once copper but was then changed to typically being gold to show ones wealth and riches. The kings were also established with the official state clothes and would wear jewelry because it was a well known sign of their power and a display of their status as king. However jewelry had also become a protective function. There was a very popular piece of jewelry known as bullah. It is worn from being an infant and makes the shape of a chain around the neck and was worn by most classes but the upper class wore ones made of gold and it was a sign that they were stronger and superior so they had the purer bullah which were worn to protect the soul from evil spirits.
When women wore jewelry it was a sign of their status because as a women you didn’t have a place on the social pyramid like the men did so one of the ways to determine your wealth was by the value of their jewelry. The amount of jewelry worn varied but the richer women wore a lot and there were all different kinds, amber necklaces and bracelets were worn by the lower class women and it was considered extremely vulgar to the upper class women who favored wearing gold.
